i just went outside. i think i heard the taos hum...
(because it doesn't know the werds.)

each place has its own night sounds...
i think these might even be more distinctive
than the daytime ones.

i used to spend summers along a big river up north of here.
back then, it was surrounded by dense forest
and the whippoorwills would lie in the grass
and call for hours at night.
lots of night calls from frogs,
and crickets chirping...
owls hooting...
sometimes there would be splashing noises down at the river
and if you were quiet and went down there
there would be fish in the very shallow water...
lots of them...
and there were inky black skies that seemed like you were
sitting inside an upside-down bowl
and the stars were little diamonds strewn across it.

then, you go somewhere else..
like the desert in Arizona.
it's different all over again.
has its own bird sounds
and creatures moving in the sand.
the air always has this dry feel to it..
like there is no ceiling above...
just like the earth is touching the sky.
and when you walk around at night,
you seem to hear ever grain of sand
moving under your shoes..shuffling..
which is probably a good reason
not to be wearing shoes i s'pose.
