The next election could be conducted under very trying circumstances. There are serious economic imbalances and political strains in the world, and a willingness -- perhaps even an eagerness -- to destabilize the world not just expressed by terrorists, but also promoted by the Bush Administration in its rush to embrace an extreme and isolationist foreign policy ideology. Be careful what you wish for. The glue that holds the world as we know it together is weakening -- and we have an administration that has shown contempt for the glue that is left to hold it together. If things really do come apart, nobody has more to lose than America.

If Bolton loses the nomination, that would be a major step forward in reversing a foreign policy that has gone tragically awry.
