What is with the new pope that sets people off so? From my vantage point (far, very far away from an understanding of Church politics), it looks like they did what I guessed they would do - they looked for a known & dependable man who would hold a steady course for a few years, while they all took time to digest the lessons of John Paul II's pontificate.

I listened to the Beeb's coverage of the new pope on the radio last night. The sound of retching was audible from the BBC studios. Well, not actually, but it might as well have been. Who is Cardinal Ratzinger? they asked. "Cardinal Ratzinger has many critics..." they began. They got one liberal theologian after another to pound on him, with occasional bits of praise from some Opus Dei type.
