What is with the new pope that sets people off so?

IMO the answer to that question is simply that Ratzinger is a religious hardliner who insists on retaining traditional Catholic orthodoxy, and refuses to accept the views that the church should adapt to "modern" cultural trends.

That is deplored by many on the left who support liberal ideas like abortion rights, gay rights, women in the priesthood, school distribution of contraceptives, and so on. Lots of left-of-center Catholics are thus mightily turned off.
