When my dad was growing up his home was full of alcoholics, and my mother's home was full of child abuse. I can't say I think the good old days were all that good. A lot of really horrible family abuse was concealed in those days, due to lack of forensic sophistication and plain old denial. I think ethical and moral values are great, but it seems to me they can often come in tandem with rigidity and real cruelty. I would like to see more kindness taught- and see it taught without regard to any religion. I would like to see people lectured on being kind and compassionate to everyone, regardless of creed, or political affiliation, or whether they are gay or straight, or whether they want choice for abortion, or are against it. I would like to hear everyone raise their voices to say that violence against people who simply believe in different democratic choices is wrong, and unacceptable. I do not want to look backward to a golden time that never existed, but to look forward to a time of more freedom for more people, and less reactionary fervor.
