We've supported Israel since 1948. Harry Truman was initially against supporting Israel in the UN, but was convinced by his SS to change his position, in the worldwide guilt over the Holocaust
Hoo-boy, WHERE did you learn your history? You're totally mixed up! If by Truman's SS you mean George Marshall, Marshall was dead set against recognizing Israel and Truman had to overrule him!
May 12 [1948] President Truman meets in the Oval Office with Secretary of State George Marshall, Under Secretary of State Robert Lovett, Counsel to the President Clark Clifford and several others to discuss the Palestine situation. Clifford argues in favor of recognizing the new Jewish state in accordance with the United Nations resolution of November 29, 1947. Marshall opposes Clifford's arguments, and contends they are based on domestic political considerations. The State Department has always been anti-Semitic. They made damn sure none of those Jews fleeing Hitler made it into the US, and as few as possible of the survivors as well. Remember the Saint Louis?
The US and Russia both recognized Israel in 1948. But Israel was a socialist country then, and closer to Russia's orbit than ours. Europe supported Israel back then. Israel bought its airforce from France, and was still flying French jets in 1967. It wasn't until the 60s that the USSR began a close alliance with Nasser; the US moved into alliance with Israel as a result. |
