They're like little kids that don't want to eat their dinner before they get dessert, and don't want to take naps, and don't want to take baths, and are going to hold their breath until they turn blue and have a tantrum.

The thing they long for most in this world is firm guidance and strong boundaries.

Otherwise, you're right, they'd leave the Church. It's not like they don't have other options.
