I know he was Pope John Paul II's confidant for many many years and as quick as the College of Cardinals picked him, I'm thinking his name was tossed into the hat via those papers the Vatican burned of the late Pope's.

He is old and that's a worry. I believe that the Church will continue on the path it's already on because Pope Benedict XVI was the guardian of the Catholic doctrine. He's been called for many years the "guard dog" of Catholic doctrine. Many American Catholics were looking for a more liberal Pope.....they didn't get one here.

As with any newly elected individual, there's a bit of a honeymoon period. I'll be interested to see in the coming months what Pope Benedict XVI has in store for us.
