If that's the reasoning, how come the Rhythm method is okay?

If the Church were just pro-procreation, that would be consistent. But they are not. They are pro-procreation but also rather anti-sex, so abstinence always seems to trump procreation. Even inside marriage.

If you're really pro-procreation then you want everybody to marry and have kids. You don't promote celibacy as a better choice. That's the position of Judaism, btw. There are no Orthodox Jewish bachelors.
