>The fact is scientific research, and not right wing mysticism, has determined there is no Nazareth. Deal with it!

I was talking to a buddy of mine who has a Master's in Divinity from Harvard...

Did he graduate within the last year? The brother-n-law of a friend here just got a Master's in theology from Harvard last fall or last summer.

he said that while there's no archaeological evidence that Jesus ever existed, there are several apocryphal Gospels (such as Thomas) that were written very soon after Jesus' death, and they're surprisingly consistent when it comes to some details about Jesus, and thus he is led to believe that Jesus actually existed.

From what I understand, all the Gospels were written by people who were born after Jesus died.

Having said that, all he says that he thinks is true about the Jesus story is that he was some sort of theological rebel and was possibly crucified. He thinks that most of the rest was made up.

Even that is an improvement over not having existed at all. Think about how much of this country's perspective and its way of life has been molded by his alleged existence. In fact, there are two national holidays in commemoration where business comes to a virtual standstill. During December, how well XMAS goes determines the mental well being of millions of Americans.

In the world, how many people have been tortured and killed in the name of Christ. How many Jews were killed because they did not believe that Christ was the son of God? It boggles my mind.

I had no idea that the existence of Jesus and Nazareth were in question. I feel like the ten year old kid who still believes in Santa Claus.

In ancient times, I guess there was a need for religious figures like Jesus and Mohammed even if they weren't real. Given this info, it blows my mind that Pope John Paul talks about the resurrection and his plans for the afterlife. The people in the church must be in total denial.

Having said all that, thanks for the info. ;~((
