There is no basic inherent human right to eat or torture animals. In America most people believe it is acceptable behavior, but others believe that most people will soon stop eating animals, after human consciousness is raised a bit. The people who have stopped eating animals are gaining at the moment, actually. One day it may seem extremely bizarre to have treated animals the way we do now. Just because something is "normal" doesn't make it right. Most animal rights activists believe that anyone who actually visited a slaughterhouse or watched a video about what a chicken goes through to become your dinner would stop eating meat. I tend to agree. There is enormous secrecy about factory farming, but animal rights activists are trying to change that.
