Since transportation is the major user of oil, I think that's why the focus on H2 as a possible replacement fuel... a solution is needed within the area of transportation.

Battery development has not progressed like people were hoping for.

The post-1950's decentralization of American population (suburbia mostly) has created unique challenges for our society that don't exist to the same degree in places like Europe where more of the central city infrastructure has been maintained.
