You can't illustrate your points without provoking a discussion! Not here! There is a lot of recent research about how animals will deliberately choose the pellets containing painkillers if they are in pain, even when they are not as well rewarded for that choice. And the pain of mulesing, where lambs' entire backsides are carved off, leaving raw flesh, lasts for 72 days and many of the lambs die of their suffering. But since it is late I will spare you some of the details. Many chickens die of pain and despair when their beaks are chopped off at factory farms. I would guess the pain of branding is intense but how is the animal going to express their pain? Would it stop the process? We really leave animals few choices except to endure horrific procedures without anaesthesia.
