The studies I've seen show rats pushing the lever for more drugs even when there is no pain.

I've never been in an industrial chicken farm. I don't imagine it is pleasant for anyone, especially the chickens. However, the chickens must be raised healthy in order to qualify for human consumption. Kept free of parasites, fed and watered, kept warm, and so forth.
