Per year.

Average total monthly income for people in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing and a couple of other big cities is around 5000 Yuan, but a lot of unemployed workers earn much less, plenty who have decent jobs earn much more than that.

My brother, and a couple of friends, are all doing research. Their pay is not that high (5000/month after tax), but they can have year end bonus as much as 40,000-50,000 Yuan after tax. So all in all, the average pay after tax is around 10,000 a month. So they have much more disposable income in China than I do here in the US.

The figure you read is for a average city, not high income big cities.
