Market Reaction: Nokia (NOK) and Q1 2005 Wireless Earnings Week

Q1 2005 wireless earnings week is over and Nokia was the big winner on Thursday morning's excellent Q1 earnings results. Tech got a needed bounce this week and so did wireless sector but when the casinos closed for the week on Friday Nasdaq was -30.22 at 1932.19 for the day, and NOK closed down 4¢ (0.024%) on average volume.

On the brigh side ...

* NOK is up 3.8% CYTD (v. NASDAQ down 11.2%) and it leads large cap gainers in wireless sector this year.

* NOK is up 7.9% in 12 months.

* Thursday NOK's 6.6% gain was on top of Wednesdays's 4% gain going into earnings which in turn was a reaction to Monday's CQ1 report by Texas Instruments (TXN) who is Nokia's strategic partner and Nokia's primary supplier of wireless ICs.

* Thursday's volume was 3.2x average daily volume for NOK. Serious rather than casual buying obviously occurred.

* Nokia appears poised to move off a prolonged stall point and resume both topline and earnings growth in both euro dollars this year and in US dollars (where they have not been stalled on the top line).

* NOK is trading very close to its 52 week high of $16.90 and it would be nice to see the sunny side of $17 again and in the course of this year hit some of the price targets beyond that which some tenured analysts are projecting for them.
