Maurice:

Trying to use NZ-Aus social/political/economic relationship as analogous to China-Taiwan is somewhat naive in my opinion. China-Taiwan has some unique aspects:
1. Different political systems
2. Large dominant China Vs puny Taiwan
3. The current superpower US being obsessed with China's growth and somewhat paranoid about
4. Neighboring powers such as Japan also being paranoid
5. US military assistance and presence in Taiwan
6. The history of the formation of Taiwan in its relationship to the Korean war, WWII resolutions etc.
7. Focus in the UN as to who is real China - Taiwan or China

No such tensions in Aus-NZ case. In fact most people do not even worry about the existence of these two nations in the southern hemisphere.

China-Taiwan issue is similar to the India-Pakistan issue without the religious angle and aslo has more sensitive geopolitical balance. Indians do not claim ownership of Pakistan although it was carved out of the original India due to British political calculations andinherent Hindu-Muslim divides.
