Dear MSB: The proper use of tongues is rather dramatically spelled out by Paul in Corinthians Chap 14. In VS 19 Paul tells us that tongues in a public service are useless unless interpreted.

Tongues are spoken to God . Prophecy is spoken to man. The prophet is greater than the person who speaks in tongues, unless the tongues are interpreted and understood. The speaker of tongues must pray for interpretation while the prophet need not.

One reason tongues are so misunderstood is the rampant misuse of tongues. Even the spirit of tongues must be interpreted to see if from God or from the utterance of man.

Nevertheless all spiritual gifts vs. 12 are for the edifying of the church. Tongues unless interpreted are not fruitful. VS 21 and 22 in Chap 14 tongues are for a sign to the unbeliever.

VS 23 / Tongues are to be given out orderly. One at a time and the interpretation one at a time. Or what will happen. The unbeliever will think "ye are mad". Even prophecy is to be given one at a time.

Only two and at the most three will at any time speak. VS 27 and finally vs 33 God is not the subject of confusion but of peace..

What can be summed up by all this . Not only is Paul speaking to the church today but obviously tongues was a misunderstood and common 'problem' then as well in the first century....

In Christ....gregor
