Its like an MD not knowing that AIDS is spread primarily through the exchange of bodily fluids.

No its more like a MD not knowing the specific treatment for a not particular common disease. The argument that Jesus was not a historical person is not common, and its possible they never heard it before.

If they were experts in the historical details of Jesus life or in biblical archeology than they should have had a response planed. If they were people designated by the Church to deal with situations like this then they better have a response ready or be able to come up with one quickly. But if they are just two random priests, or even bishops its not much a shock that they were not prepared to respond.

The show put an expert at making this particular argument, against people who are not used to conquering it. If they had put an expert for the "Jesus did not exist" argument on the TV, they should put an equivalent expert from the other side against them. Just being prominent in the church doesn't make you an expert on all issues that deal with church beliefs, and more than being a podiatrists makes you an expert on how to treat stomach cancer.
