This cost can be lessened if universities raise their entrance standards slightly.

Bright kids will usually find a way to get an education. If they do well in the USA, they can get more from what we have than kids in any other country in the world. The ones at the other end will fail in any system.

What our system fails is the average kid. We don't require enough from them. You can coast through K-12 without learning much if you keep your mouth shut and your nose clean. The system is designed to fool the kids and the parents into believing they are doing well when they aren't. It may catch up with them in college. If it doesn't, it catches up with them when they finally go to work and don't do well. By then, it is too late.
