Gus > On second thought, you'd better move to Israel

Out of the frying pan, into the fire! Next thing you'll be telling me I should move to the US.

Actually, in the 1970s and 1980s relations between SA and Israel were very good. Israel was even involved in the development of the SAn military and, in fact, the atomic bomb which Israel now has was developed as a joint venture with SA.

>>Close ties between South Africa and Israel developed in the 1970s, engendering favourable attitudes towards the Jews on the part of the white population, although antisemitic outbursts, including expressions of Holocaust denial, were prevalent among elements of the white far right.

The majority black population felt betrayed by Israel's close relations with South Africa and sympathized with the Palestinian cause. Although black leaders clearly distinguished between anti-Zionism and antisemitism, there are indications of some anti-Jewish attitudes among black élites.<<

Today, with the pronounced leaning of the SAn government towards "non-aligned" and Islamic countries I think relations are not so warm as before although, recently, an Israeli delegation came out to observe interracial and interreligious relationships.

>>The meeting in Pretoria is an integral part of ongoing efforts by South Africa to assist both Israelis and Palestinians find a common ground with a view to developing a just, lasting and comprehensive resolution to the current conflict. In this context a number of meetings have been held with representatives of both Palestinians and Israelis since 2002 beginning with the Presidential Spier Initiative held in Cape Town.

The South African delegation also hopes to share its experiences with members of the Likud Party about the transformation process that led to the dawn of democracy, peace and justice in South Africa.<<
