Karen,

And it's just silly to bundle fascism as anti-religious when the only remotely plausible threat of fascism we face today is from the religious absolutist/authoritarians. He has it bass-ackwards.

You might like to thinks so, but the prevailing anti-clerical, anti-Catholic organizations of the 20th century were Facism and Communism.

Now you could argue that absolutist religious groups are similar to Facists - but this is in the sense that they are both totalitarian and dislike any competition.

Now with both Communists and Fascists it may have been a 'power thing' for the leaders, but it was definitely pushed as a 'faith based' program on the lower echelons and masses. I would suggest reading 'Bread and Wine' by Ignazio Silone. This is written from the perspective of a communist in Italy, but the imagery captures the moment.
