Let's agree on this: eleven separate execution dates, sometimes receiving a stay just hours before he was due to die. Is this torture? It is, by most people's definition. Who then are the torturers? We who must live with each other and cannot tolerate murderers amongst us? Those whose grim duty it is to act for us? Or those standing outside the prison with their candles, delaying the painless inevitable and turning it into excruciating agony for condemned, survivor, hangman, and witness alike?
