My brother-in-law started training to be a guard at a county jail. Three weeks into the training he dropped out because the inmates were basically out of control people who made every effort to provoke the guards, fought and bit each other with their hepatitis-C infected teeth, spat and attempted to soil those around them, and generally proved every day that they deserved to be kept behind bars. The guards were required to control those people while they were precluded from cold-cocking, or effectively subduing them in any but the most "professional" manner.

Punishing an innocent person is so abhorrent that the few times it happens it gets blown all out of proportion.

It is a fact that most people in jail deserve to be there. They deserve to be treated humanely, but they don't deserve special treatment or favors.

The night of Timothy McVeigh's execution there was VERY LITTLE discussion of the justice of his fate. Until I created the following thread, there wasn't even a place to discuss it on SI. Subject 51329 The last post on that thread was logged on 9/11/01.

I'll say this: Timothy McVeigh will never blow up another building.
