Kahil Gibran was expressing his world view. That doesn't make him more right than anyone else (although I like the way he used words).

What are the sound principles hunting inculcates?

I do not see how, after reading why you like hunting, you do not think you are pursuing it as a recreational endeavor. I must note that taking a long early drive in the country with your hunting partner and a Thermos of excellent coffee would fulfill much of what you say you like. The other part, even though you say you don't always win, really is a blood lust, a competitive urge to kill something for pleasure. And unless you are hunting with your bare hands, you have a huge advantage. I have never understood why people feel so victorious when they do win, with such advantages of intelligence and overpowering technology.
