just think this is a moment when the markets are central to more than investment. In a way, I think that markets - I do mean stock markets - are seen as proxies for (political) success on a global scale with enormous ramifications

EW orthodoxy, basically, is that social groups are manic-depressive. Markets and economies and social events - like war and peace and public mores - keep changing, driven along certain cyclic patterns by their own inner rhythms. Those rhythms are what initiates both - market AND real world - events.

Markets are much easier to chart then most other social events and processes. Charts, when read by skillful people, have - not always, but often enough - predictive value.
