I must be very slow this evening, because I didn't understand your anecdote about the man who called his wife from Mt. Everest.

That was Rob Hall. He was a New Zealander who led a group up Everest during the fated 1996 climbing season. He and Seattleite Scott Fischer were in an effective competition to guide their groups up the mountain. Both groups should have turned back and did not, as a storm bore down on them. Hall slowly froze to death at a point somewhere below the Hillary Step after he was unable to get down the mountain. People in base camp patched him through on a cell phone link to his wife in New Zealand (she was expecting their child at the time).

Very tragic, and it didn't have to happen.

Jon Krakauer's book, "Into Thin Air" is a very good read and details the climb and its aftermath.
