Ray, As are the right-to-life voters and blue-collar gun owners

Not really. Most of those who vote based on pro-life or pro-gun stances are part of the cultures and mentalities that form the base of Republican support.

Compare this with blue-collar workers or racial minorities, who usually espouse conservative family values but vote Democrat only because of union or racial loyalty.

First of all, there are hell of lot of white, non union Dem/liberals who espouse conservative family values. Conservative family values are not the exclusive domain of the right although they work very hard to convince us that that's true.

Secondly, I don't think the comparison is all that apt. As you describe, most blue collar workers and minorities vote a particular way due to peer pressure. I think that's true. However, with pro lifers/pro gun people, its more than just peer pressure. They seek out those two issues with a kind of passion that is unusual. Its the same zeal I see with people who are into their religion or feel a great sense of nationalism. I think you come to those positions more because of your internal feelings rather than through peer pressure.

In fact, I think its a kind of passion that you wish more people felt the same way.......if that makes sense.
