Wharf Rat, I beg to differ with your physical therapist. From personal experience and in talking with others in the know, crutches pose an unnecessary danger to the person who is temporarily unable to walk. Yeah, you guessed it: I could not, for the life of me, get the hang of using them safely.

A few years ago, I broke an ankle--my first break ever. I was lucky, in that I had to spend only a week in a cast before I was given a walking boot. I can safely say, without fear of contradiction, that for that week I was confined to a (nonmotorized) wheelchair, there was nothing in God's world I wanted more than to be able to get up and walk and get about under my own steam. From what I have observed, I have no reason to believe that I, among the temporarily nonambulatory, was alone in that desire.

BTW, what are Canadian crutches? - Holly
