What is key about using google news in this case is that it gives you a history of news releases, not just the current reports. If you sort the results by date/time, you can see what news was out there at a particular point in time, like 7:48 yesterday morning. It's a really nice feature.

I wish the regular search considered timeliness. I was searching for episode guides for a TV show the other day to find out what I missed in a recent story line and had to sift through web sites that had episode guides for the early seasons and hadn't been updated in years. It took me a while to find a timely one. If you're looking for information on some medical treatment and find old information... It would be nice to get recently updated pages first.
