Handset Sales Update

Siemens reports 2 million less than my WAG and drops from 4th to 6th.

Siemens telecoms division, Com, which brings in one quarter of Siemens' revenues, swung to an operating loss of 19 million euros, at the low end of analysts' forecasts. Siemens sold 9.3 million handsets in the quarter, down from 12.8 million in the year-ago period, meaning it dropped to sixth place in global rankings of mobile phone makers as Sony Ericsson overtook it. The handset unit, which is part of Siemens's communication division, had a loss of 138 million euros in the quarter as sales fell 30 percent to 842 million euros. Siemens said it expects further charges from the Com group, which lost 11 million euros.

All majors have now reported. 'Others' is estimated below. Nokia's view of 170 million handset unit sales appears spot on and Motorola's 168m very close. Unit shipment growth of 11.2% over the year ago quarter is higher than most analysts projected.
