"I think it's more than that religion is a distraction from the nation's business. I think Americans get scared when they confront people who are too religious......The Republicans' weakness is that people worry that they're the party of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. "

I had a buddy who was catholic and had become and evangelical after 60s-70s post drug abuse phase. Nice guy, nice family. We fell out of the friendship because he was always clandesinely trying to convert me. As a Jew, i am a prime target for the evangelicals. Get more points or something for converting a Jew. But what really killed my friendship is that he really believed that myself, my kids and my grandkids were all going to hell if we didnt convert as were most catholics and protestants for that matter. A religion that interpets God this way offends both religious Mike and secular Mike. My Catholic friends tell me there is none of this in the Catholic creed anymore and on numerous TV shows Catholics reiterated this doctrine with the popes passing and the election. I kind of hope my former friend reconverts to catholicism.
Anyway i write all this to express my nervousness about falwell and robertson. I just cant trust guys who believe that God is saving heaven just for them. And when Frist on the air, that nervousness became more palpable for me. Mike
