I almost always link to my references, but I seriously doubt many of the people responding to my posts actually read the references. Politicians exploit this almost complete lack of desire to investigate on the part of the public to make the specious claims they make and have people believe them. They know that almost no one but the hardcore opposition is going to question their claims. Then they can dismiss the counter as being bias. People have little interest in a truth that might undermine their deeply held prejudice.

I will happily become his research assistant, post all the bazillion internet links he needs to blog some intelligent material

I remember Bill Gates was quoted years ago to the effect that the worst aspect of having his email address out in the public was that he got emails from individuals basically wanting him to answer their homework questions.
