If you are an aerospace design engineer, usually you are prepared to explain how a plane flies and why the design facilitates that capability.

The analogy is week. "How a plane flies" is not something that requires the experience of an aerospace engineer. Ordinary educated people can understand how life works. A better analogy would be expecting pilots to know very detailed aerospace engineering information.

In any case the lack of information, or ability to argue, or confidence, or preparation, of two people, isn't an argument for the case that they can't argue against. Even if it does imply incompetence on their part, as you seem to suggest, it doesn't imply anything about the issue that they couldn't respond to.
