I think the cause of this is globalization and its big proponents. Think of globalization as socialism maybe even economic communism on a global scale. Instead of the individual middle class being plundered for redistribution of wealth to lower classes while the truely rich keep theirs, we have industrialized nations being plundered (jobs for now, resources probably later) for redistribution to the poorest nations in the world.

This country assumed great status after WWII producing just about all the consumer goods in the world because Europe and Japan were in ruins. WWII of course was a long time ago and that boost effect is long gone.
