Even old stem cells can be cancerous

A study by Antonio Bernad and his team at the Autonomous University of Madrid in Spain reveals that the stem cells even from adults can turn cancerous if they are allowed to grow for too long outside the body.
The new studies however suggest that adult stem cells are safe only if they are not allowed to multiply outside the body for too long.

The study in the New Scientist magazine reports that Stem cells grown in culture for a long time probably become cancerous because they start making telomerase, an enzyme that immortalizes cells by rejuvenating the mingle on chromosomes that normally limits the number of times a cell can divide.

The scientists have already unveiled the cancer risk with stem cells extracted from very early embryos. Until they change into more specialized tissue, they can develop aggressive cancers called teratomas when injected into animals.

Until now it was widely accepted that adult stem cells, such as those taken from bone marrow, do not form cancers.

The bone-marrow stem cells therapy has already been used for treating damaged hearts.
