Strong oil and gas prices drive Unocal in Q1

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Unocal Corp. Thursday reported first-quarter earnings of $454 million, or $1.66 a share, up from a year-ago profit of $269 million, or $1 a share. On an adjusted basis, the El Segundo, Calif., oil company earned $441 million, or $1.62 a share, in the latest quarter. The average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson First Call was for a profit of $1.37 a share in the March period. Revenue from continuing operations reached $2.19 billion in the latest three months from $1.88 billion in the same period a year earlier. The company said its latest results were driven by strong crude oil and natural gas prices.
