Let me make one thing perfectly clear: "I am not sticking up for them."

I was trying to quantify what it takes to give the investor confidence that the company will be successful or unsuccessful based on insider trading. Since insider trading appears to be evaluated more on an individual and emotional basis than on objective measurement, I give up.

My conclusion is that the insider is in a no-win situation: 1) If the insider doesn't own stock it shows lack of confidence; or 2) if the insider already owns stock but has not purchased any recently that also shows a lack of confidence; or 3) if the insider sells any stock that certainly shows a lack of confidence.

As to Dr. Schmidt, I don't know what he would have to do to satisfy everyone that he is fully committed and has confidence in the future of the company. If Novell is doomed, as some seem to believe, then he has put his career in serious jeopardy. Or, how about the many hours required on the job, traveling and being away from his family, and the stress associated with trying to turn Novell around? In my opinion, Dr. Schmidt has invested heavily in this company and it should be recognized and appreciated.
