I need some TV advice...

I need to buy a new TV... I don't want a huge home entertainment center TV, just a 24-27 inch. Yesterday at Circuit City the salesperson insisted that in 5 years none of my current TVs will work because they are not High Definition. Is this true? Do I have to spring for HD if I want the TV to last more than 5 years? Will I have to throw out my other little TVs (office, bedroom, etc.) in 5 years? I connect with "advanced" cable.
