FULANI AT WAR WITH COUNCIL

nypost.com

April 30, 2005 -- A new furor erupted yesterday involving Lenora Fulani after the City Council announced plans to rebuke the Independence Party leader and her lawyer threatened to sue.
Councilman Lew Fidler (D-Brooklyn) circulated a resolution to condemn Fulani for recently saying her 1989 remark that Jews "had to sell their souls to acquire Israel" wasn't anti-Semitic.

But Harry Kresky, Fulani's lawyer, warned council Speaker Gifford Miller to expect a lawsuit seeking damages if the resolution in enacted.

"It is of deep concern that the New York City Council would consider publicly condemning a citizen for exercise of First Amendment rights and the expression of an opinion as to whether or not a statement is anti-Semitic," Kresky wrote Miller.

"It appears to be a blatant attempt to influence the outcome of the mayoral election, in which you are a candidate, by seeking to discredit a leader of the Independence Party."

Kevin Sheekey, Mayor Bloomberg's campaign manager, claimed Miller was playing politics.

"These comments were from 1989, but they didn't do this when Sen. Schumer, Attorney General Spitzer, or when any of the dozen other current officials including Giff Miller took the line since then," said Sheekey.
