The SmearVets were exposed and discredited, but only by responsible journalists and fact-finders, plus Kerry's friends. The problem was (and still is) that the rightwing propaganda machine (and it's huge these days) and rightwing extremist vets (the ones who probably cheered the JFK assassination) trumpeted the SmearVet lies anyway, with glee in fact, and then used negative imagery like Jane Fonda on the AA gun to reinforce a delusion that Kerry was somehow a traitor.

The fact is, unless you know Vietnam War history, Kerry did look pretty radical at his congressional testimony. But in fact, US soldiers had been thrust into a war where atrocities were normal, and the Phoenix Program did involve hundreds of not thousands of gruesome assassinations.

The rightwing vets of course refuse to acknowledge Phoenix ever happened, try to tell is My Lai was an isolated event and want us to believe Vietnbam was a just and sane war. It wasn't. It was a huge dishonest mistake. It divided our country. But in the end a vast majority of Americans knew it needed to end. The minority who didn't will never forgive those who "aided the enemy" by wanting to end the war. But as Jesus said, blessed are the peacemakers.
