I think the argument is this. Online brokers want to keep costs low so they discourage "calling" brokers. If you want to avoid the FIFO rule, you have to call and trade with the broker, at least that's what MJ was told.

I suggested that at Ameritrade I've been able to avoid the FIFO rule AFTER the fact by emailing customer service and telling them to match X buy block against Y sell block. They always confirm with an email, which is probably computer generated and doesn't involve any real work.

My suggestion that even this is a pain in the a.. for heavy traders and I'd like to see a pull down menu.
