KLP, One thing that has not been mentioned, but is important to the future of Social Security. When FDR proposed the project, he was counting on the usual death of a person to be around 70 years old, and the government would have to pay that person for only 5 years. With the advances that allow people much longer, that theory has been knocked into a cocked hat.

I guess that FDR either didn't anticipate longer lives, or figured the he would be gone and the mess would fall on someone elses' shoulders.
