The main thing was that I was shooting for simplicity, but I'm not a real fan of the current SS paradigm.

As for an "insurance model", I think its a "faux insurance model". Real insurance is when you share risk of unlikely events, so that you don't get ruined if your the unfortunate one that a major disaster hits. Retirement isn't an "unpredictable disaster", that only hits an unfortunate few.

We have a similar problem with health insurance. If auto insurance was like health insurance we would make a monthly payment in to a program and get a card that we show every time that we get gas or get an oil change or a tune up. I'm more of a fan of catastrophic insurance. I think the fact that "someone else pays" is one the biggest reasons that health care spending is out of control.
