Coug, you just quoted one of the greatest speeches of all time, from one of the greatest heroes of all time.

I've walked some of the trail on which Joseph took his entire tribe over the mountains. I've lived only a few miles from several of the greatest battlefields on that trip. I've seen the rifle pits and the shot-up trees still standing at the Big Hole Battlefield.

One of my favorite stories is how when the soldiers at Ft. Missoula were ordered to stop his flight over the Lolo Trail, they threw up a breastworks. Joseph found out about this roadblock and simply took his people around the fort up in the mountains. I've hunted those mountains, and got my first deer not far from the breastworks. It is not easy country, Steep and mountainous. Joseph and his entire tribe outsmarted the soldiers by simply going around. I've heard that his many friends in Missoula really did not want him intercepted, but what ever the truth is that breastworks will forever be known as...

...Fort Fizzle.

Chief Joseph was the essence of leadership, and, as you say, a great peacemaker.
