US doesn't have a free market healthcare system. It has a hodgepodge hybrid of socialized medicine mixed in with incentive trap HMOs. Almost every single visit to an ER in the last 20 years, I've been the only patient in the waiting area with private insurance, everyone else was either Medicare or Medicaid.

How many crack babies are born in Australia? How many twelve year olds giving birth? How many GSWs per year? I work in a city with 40,000 drug addicts and on average one homicide per day as well as numerous shootings. It's amazing what deaths from GSWs do to your life expectancy figures since they routinely hit very young victims. 43,000 is about what it takes to fill the baseball stadium on a nice summer evening, when they do the guess the attendance game at the baseball game I think about all those addicts out there doing some life threatening activity every single day in order to get their fix. I'm guessing that no amount of improvement in primary care would make much of a difference in their lives. Ya think you can get them to show up for a follow up appointment? The addicts up the street from my old studio (I moved for reasons that will be obvious) tell me the best place to score is outside the city sponsored methadone clinic up the street. Judging from the number of needles and crack vials in the area, I'm guessing they're telling the truth. Either there or any one of the public housing projects around town. The Korean store owners in that neighborhood would routinely exchange liquor and cigarettes for food stamps (your tax dollars at work).

I don't think much of socialism, since I have 30 years of dodging it's failures trying to make it from my car into the office without getting mugged. Baltimore is a perfect model of what a disaster the Great Society programs have wrought on cities all over America.
