Lots of different types and sources of money are channeled to US political campaigns, etc, etc. It's how the game is played, and it's not just one side, but doled out to both sides, i.e. Republicans and Democrats. Sometimes more to one side, and a little to the other side. Higher probability for favorable policies from one side, and trying to eke out a status quo from the other side (on choosing the party to contribute). It's a science not for the amateurs. Yet most American public still live in a disneyesque goody two shoes world. Oops, forgot to mention the derivatives and affiliations. It's been this way for the last 30 years. Is this a new revelation? Hopefully it's not too shocking.
