Wow! Nice to know this thread isn't dead! :-) I have a question. Has anyone climbed Mt. Whitney? I'd like to do it as a long (grueling!) day hike, but a good friend who's climbed it (as part of a two week jaunt on the John Muir trail) strongly advised against tackling it in one day. This surprised me as this person is an excellent, strong hiker. I've always had the impression that Mt. Whitney is quite hikable in a day (albeit a LONG day!).

Any thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

Another question. Has anyone hiked Half Dome? Would there still be snow on the trail in late May? It's not that high (reaches a peak of 8,800 feet or so) but CA has had a LOT of rain this past year, and I'm sure Yosemite received a fair share of snow. Is a late May climb of Half Dome chancing it with the trail conditions? I'd personally rather go later, but I have an opportunity to join some friends, and I'd hate to pass it up!

Speaking of Half Dome, I've been told to wear gloves for the cables. Anyone know what kind of gloves??? :-)

Thanks in advance for any feedback. Glad to see there's life on this board!
