I agree with you that the fact libertarians are discussing school vouchers indicates that their philosophy in its purest form of no public schools allows for some kind of assistance to children who cannot afford private schools on their own.

I have two primary concerns about using tax dollars for vouchers for private schools. The first is that this weakens public schools even further. The second is that the most vulnerable students in public schools come from families with significant problems like extremely poverty, alcoholism and drug addiction. I think the parents in these families are often incapable of advocating for their children's education. So they wouldn't be fighting to get them into voucher programs.

I think philosophically that in societies like America, with so many immigrants and so many poor people, schools CAN function as the great equalizer, helping people move up in society. I think we also need great and fully funded Head Start programs everywhere to get children primed to take advantage of good public schools. America used to have good public schools, but they are not anymore. I think we are falling backwards as a nation because our students are no longer competitive with students from more homogenous societies with better education systems. This is where I would rather put energy, because I don't think voucher programs really address social change the way we will need to in order to turn this mess around. But I am happy to read of individual students benefitting, in the articles I read that you submitted.
