I don't think war with a nuclear state automatically becomes nuclear war.

Until they start losing.


If they start losing bad, and you are actually starting to invade them or reign massive destruction on them, than I think they threaten to use nukes if you don't stop, and the threat might be real. But I don't think its likely that nukes will be used just because an invasion attempt is defeated. If they think they are going to lose it all then they might think about nukes. Of course "I don't think its likely", isn't very solid reassurance when nukes are involved.

A tactical nuke might not cause that.

It might not but its more likely to than straight conventional fighting is.

Idiots or nutcases would.

Sometimes highly frightened people become idiots or nutcases.
